First-time rafting: what a beginner's day on the Köprüçay actually looks like

Last updated

No previous experience is needed to raft on the Köprüçay from Side, and you do not have to be a swimmer: a trained guide rides in every raft, and helmet, life jacket and paddle are fitted at the base before a briefing and a practice session on calm water. Most of the day is decided for you. What is genuinely down to you fits on a short list.

Do you need experience? No — and that is not marketing

It arrives on WhatsApp before almost every first booking: is wanting to go enough when you have never done it? The record for the tour states that no previous experience is required, and that non-swimmers take part — life jacket on, guide in the boat. That is a participation rule, not a reassuring phrase.

It also helps to know who else is in the raft. On an ordinary day from Side, most of your crew are holding a paddle for the first time too. Nobody watches your technique: the guide expects beginners, briefs beginners and steers accordingly.

What you actually do in the boat

You sit on the side tube rather than a bench inside the boat, feet braced. You hold the paddle with one hand on the T-grip and the other lower down the shaft, and you paddle when the guide calls for it: forwards, backwards, or not at all. Between the rapids there is time to look up at the canyon walls.

You will get wet. Not damp — wet, from the first rapid and for the twelve kilometres of the route. That is why the swimsuit goes on under your clothes and dry clothes stay in the bag at the base.

What the guide does — and what is decided for you

A trained guide rides in every raft — one per boat, not one for the group — and reads the water for the whole route. They pick the line through each rapid, call the commands and decide where a swimming stop makes sense. On a first day that is what matters: the decisions with consequences are not yours.

The same is true of the frame around the day. Whether the river is run at all belongs to the operator and the guides, not to a timetable. Equipment is fitted to you at the base, and the safety briefing and practice on calm water come before the first rapid, not during it.

The shape of the day, so nothing surprises you

Pickup from your hotel is approximately 08:00–08:30, and the exact time is confirmed personally after booking: it depends on your hotel, the region and the day's route. Then an air-conditioned transfer into Köprülü Canyon National Park, the base, the briefing, the run, and a riverside lunch that is in the price. Drinks are extra, at lunch and across the day.

The return falls in a window, not at a time: between 16:30 and 18:30, depending on group size, the number of activities, the operator's schedule, traffic and the river. How long rafting takes walks through the day hour by hour.

The five things that are genuinely down to you

Almost everything else is handled. What is left is short, and every item can be settled the evening before:

  • Footwear. It has to fasten to your foot and survive a soaking: water shoes, strapped sandals or old trainers. Flip-flops are not allowed on the river; water shoes can be rented at the base.
  • Honesty about your health. Pregnancy, a serious heart condition, asthma or a similar respiratory condition, a severe back or mobility problem and recent surgery rule the river out. The full list is short.
  • Staying sober. Nobody who has been drinking goes on the river, without exception.
  • Listening during the briefing. It is the quiet minutes before the start that decide how the rest of the day feels.
  • What you carry. Phone, money and room card belong in the secure storage at the base, not in a boat pocket.

How to prepare the evening before

The packing is uncomplicated: swimsuit under your clothes, a towel, a full change of clothes, sunscreen and shoes that hold. Sunglasses are better on a strap or left in the room, and there is a fuller packing list if you would rather tick items off.

Bring cash as well: the tour is paid on the tour day, and whatever the base sells or hires out separately — drinks, water shoes, a wetsuit if you want one, photos and video — is paid there. Showers, a changing area, toilets and secure storage are at the base, so you travel back dry.

Booking a first rafting trip from Side

The rafting tour from Side costs €18 per adult and €12 for children aged 4 to 11, paid on the tour day. Transfer, guide, equipment, insurance and lunch sit inside that price.

If the first trip is also meant to be the only one, look at the Side rafting packages, which add a zipline flight, a quad ride or a buggy ride to the same day. Still hesitating? The honest answer on risk reads better than any promise. Ask us on WhatsApp first — a question answered in advance beats a surprise at the base.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any rafting experience to join?

No. The tour is built for people who have never sat in a raft, and the record for it states that no previous experience is required. The briefing and the practice session on calm water come before the first rapid.

I cannot swim. Can I still go rafting?

Yes. Non-swimmers take part: everyone wears a life jacket and a trained guide rides in every raft. Being a strong swimmer is not what the day asks of you.

Will somebody explain what to do before we set off?

Yes. There is a safety briefing at the base and then a practice session on calm water: how to hold the paddle, which commands the guide uses, and what to do if you end up in the water.

What should a first-timer bring?

A swimsuit worn under your clothes, a towel, a full change of clothes, sunscreen and footwear that fastens to the foot. Flip-flops are not allowed on the river. Cash too: drinks are extra, and so are water shoes if you take them at the base.

How much does a first rafting trip from Side cost?

€18 per adult and €12 for children aged 4 to 11, paid on the tour day. Round-trip hotel transfer, the guide, helmet, life jacket, paddle, insurance and the riverside lunch all sit inside that price.
