The short answer: count on the whole day
Ask how long rafting takes and you usually mean two different things: how long am I out, and how long am I in the boat? The first is easy. Rafting from Side starts with hotel pickup approximately between 08:00 and 08:30 and ends with your return approximately between 16:30 and 18:30. So do not plan half the day around it; plan all of it.
The second question we deliberately do not answer with a figure. How long 12 kilometres on the water takes depends on the water level, on the group and on the swimming stops your guide makes on the way. A number that is true on one day is false the next — and a false promise is worse than none.
How long are you on the water?
The route is fixed: 12 kilometres of the Köprüçay through Köprülü Canyon National Park, with a guide in every raft. What is not fixed is the pace. The river carries more or less water depending on the day, a group paddles briskly or at ease, and the swimming stops — at places the guide judges safe — are part of the run, not an interruption of it.
What you do know for certain: before the water there is a safety briefing and a practice session on calm water, so that the first rapid is not the first time you paddle together. That is part of the time at the river too, and it is not shortened because a group is in a hurry.
The day, step by step
This is how the day is built — as a sequence, not a timetable.
- Hotel pickup, approximately between 08:00 and 08:30, your time confirmed personally
- Drive in an air-conditioned vehicle into Köprülü Canyon National Park, to the rafting base
- Helmet and life jacket fitted, safety briefing, practice on calm water
- 12 kilometres on the Köprüçay, with swimming stops at the guide's discretion
- Lunch at the restaurant on the riverbank — included, drinks extra
- On combo tours: zipline, quad or buggy, in the order the base is working that day
- Drive back to the hotel, arriving approximately between 16:30 and 18:30
Why the return falls between 16:30 and 18:30
A two-hour spread looks generous, but it is honest. The return moves with five things: the size of the group, the number of activities in your package, the operator's schedule that day, traffic on the coast road, and the river itself. None of them is settled in the morning, and none of them can be steered from here.
That is why we promise no single time. Anyone who gives you one is selling a number they cannot keep. Plan your evening so that 18:30 at the hotel is not a problem — then every earlier arrival is a bonus.
Combo tours take longer — and include waiting
Combine the rafting with a second or third activity and you stay at the base longer. The quad ride lasts 40 minutes, the buggy ride also 40 minutes, and the zipline is a flight of 400 metres and more across the canyon. Those are the activities themselves; add the time until your group's turn comes.
That waiting time is not a flaw in the schedule but part of a full day at a base that looks after several groups. It is yours — by the river, at the restaurant, in the shade. How long it will be, we cannot promise. The packages are listed on the Side rafting packages page.
What this means for your planning
Put nothing on the rafting day that needs a fixed late-afternoon time: no early dinner table, no excursion straight after, and above all no evening flight. It is a long day for children too — a nap on the bus is normal, so keep the evening quiet.
And take the length for what it is: you pay €18 per person for transfer, guide, equipment, insurance and lunch, and for that you get a whole day in a national park, not two hours in a car park. Book rafting from Side for a day with nothing else on it.
